Natural locs aftercare: what to do in the first 48 hours
By Braids On Point | July 14, 2026
The #1 rule for the first 48 hours: keep your new locs and scalp dry. No washing, no steam, no sweating them out. We create and care for Natural Loc’s (Creation & Care) in Dayton, and that “dry time” is what helps your starter locs settle so they stay neat instead of puffing up or unraveling.

If you’re leaving our chair in South Dayton near the Salem Avenue corridor by the Kettering border, your locs are fresh, organized, and still “setting.” The first two days are simple, but they matter. Keep them dry, keep your hands out of your hair, and protect them while you sleep. Do that, and you’re giving your starter locs the best shot at staying clean-looking and consistent until your first check-in.
Your first 24–48 hours: dry scalp, low touching, zero tight styles
Right after Natural Loc’s (Creation & Care), your hair is at its most “impressionable.” A little moisture and a lot of handling can undo the neat work we just put in. In Dayton, humid summers and quick stormy days can sneak up on you, so plan like you might get caught in damp air.
Do this
- Keep locs dry. Skip washing, skip steam rooms, skip hot showers without a cover.
- Keep your hands off. Light smoothing is fine, but don’t twist, roll, or “test” the locs all day.
- Sleep protected. Satin scarf, satin bonnet, or a satin pillowcase if you’re not a scarf person.
- Wear low-tension protection outside. If you need a hat for a quick run, put a satin scarf underneath and keep the hat loose.
Don’t do this
- No tight ponytails, buns, or headbands. Early tension can irritate your scalp and mess with parting.
- No swimming. Pool water, lakes, and even splash pads can leave residue and keep locs damp longer than you think.
- No heavy products. Creams, butters, and conditioner can sit in the hair and turn into buildup fast.
If you booked an after-work appointment near Kettering, make that first night easy on yourself. Get home, keep your style loose, wrap with satin, and call it a night. Your locs will thank you in the morning.
The first week in Dayton: sweat, humidity, and “helpful” hands
After the 48-hour mark, your goal is still the same. Keep things clean-looking and low manipulation. Most issues we see early come from one of two things: too much moisture staying trapped, or too much touching.
Sweat is the big one, especially during Dayton’s humid stretches. If your workouts are non-negotiable, keep them light for the first week when you can. Think walking, gentle weights, or anything that doesn’t have your scalp drenched. Damp starter locs that don’t dry all the way can start to smell musty, and that smell can hang around.
Quick reset if your scalp feels sweaty: let everything air out, use a cool setting on a blow dryer at a distance if you need it, and keep products light. We’d rather you dry well than soak and cover.
Also, watch the “helpful hands.” Kids, partners, and even you can start pulling at a loc that looks fuzzy. Don’t pick. Don’t separate aggressively. If something looks off, take a clear photo and send it to us. A tiny fix early is easier than a big correction later.
Residue-free moisture only: what we like on starter locs
We use nourishing, residue-free products during Natural Loc’s (Creation & Care) because buildup is the fastest way to make new locs look dull and feel itchy. In the early stage, less product usually gives you better results.
Good habits
- Use a light, residue-free spritz only if we told you to moisturize.
- Oil can be fine in small amounts, mainly on the scalp, not caked through the loc.
- Keep a small “go bag” for commuters in South Dayton. Satin scarf plus a travel-size spritz goes a long way.
What to skip (for now)
- Conditioner and heavy creams that sit in the hair.
- Butters that leave a waxy feel.
- Product layering. One light thing is plenty.
When to come back: that 2–4 week check-in keeps your parts clean
Most people do best with a brief check at 2 to 4 weeks. That’s usually enough time for your hair to start settling, while still early enough to adjust tension and keep everything organized. We’ll also confirm your home routine so you’re not guessing.
We’re an easy drive for clients coming in from Kettering, Oakwood, West Carrollton, Riverside, Moraine, and Centerville. If you’re juggling family schedules, ask us about weekend-friendly timing when you book your follow-up.
Heads up: don’t rush into a full maintenance or a wash on your own if you’re unsure. A quick message to our team can save you a lot of unraveling and extra frizz.
If something feels off, tell us early (and yes, we can fit people in)
A little scalp tenderness is common in the first couple days. What we don’t want is sharp pain, bumps, or tension that doesn’t calm down. Also reach out if you notice locs slipping a lot, a musty smell after getting caught in rain, or parts that suddenly look like they’re merging.
We’re big on making sure you leave happy with what you asked for, and we stay easy to talk to after your appointment too. One of our clients put it like this:
For the very first time, someone made my hair exactly the way I wanted it❤️Thank you braids on point. Count me as a full time client.
