Passion Twists: What to Do (and Avoid) the First 48 Hours

By Braids On Point | October 29, 2026

If you just got Passion Twists, the number one rule for the first 48 hours is simple: keep them dry and stop messing with them. Passion Twists have that soft, springy, boho braids look because curly extensions are twisted into a water-wave finish, and they need a short “set” time to stay neat. In Dayton, humidity and steam can jump in fast, so I’m extra serious about keeping moisture away early on. Give your twists two calm days now, and you’ll usually get a longer-lasting, lighter-feeling style later.

Passion Twists aftercare: what to do and avoid in the first 48 hours

First 24 to 48 hours: the “set time” that prevents slippage and frizz

Right after your appointment, I want you to treat your twists like fresh braids: hands off, edges protected, and no moisture. That’s how you keep the base snug without stressing your hair. Passion Twists are lightweight by design, so they shouldn’t feel like they’re yanking. The first two days are about keeping that comfortable feel while the parts and roots settle.

Do this today: keep showers quick and dry. If you need to shower, use a shower cap and keep your hair away from steam. Steam counts as moisture.

The don’ts that cause most early problems

  • Don’t wash your Passion Twists in the first 48 hours. Even a “quick rinse” can puff the hair and loosen the base before it sets.
  • Don’t use heavy gels, edge control, or thick butters at the roots. They add weight and buildup and can make twists slide.
  • Don’t re-twist, twist-tighten, or constantly separate curls. Touching creates frizz, and over-handling can stress your edges.
  • Don’t sit in a sauna or do steam rooms. Moisture plus heat equals faster frizz.

Quick edge-protection tip

If anything feels tight at the hairline, don’t “power through.” Tie a satin scarf around the perimeter to reduce friction and keep the style laid, and let me know. I’d rather adjust early than have you dealing with sore edges later. This is true for Passion Twists, knotless braid styles, medium knotless braids, and most braided hairstyles.

Days 3 to 7: keep the boho braids look, skip the sweat and soak

After the first 48 hours, your twists usually feel more “yours.” They move better, they fluff a little, and that lived-in finish starts showing up. That’s normal, and it’s part of why people love Passion Twists for a natural look that gets better with time.

Dayton weather note: Summer humidity can make twists puff faster. Keep your scalp hydrated with a light spray, not a heavy grease. In fall and winter, the air tends to be drier, so a slightly richer seal at night usually helps.

Exercise and sweating

I generally recommend avoiding heavy sweating for the full 48 hours. After that, ease back in. If you’re a shift-worker or you commute on I-75 and gym time is your stress relief, keep it simple: a sweatband on the hairline, hair tied back loosely (not tight), and blot the scalp afterward. Don’t drench it and don’t pile product on top of sweat.

Swimming

Wait 1 to 2 weeks before swimming if you can. If you have to get in sooner, tie the hair up, keep your time in the water short, and rinse gently afterward. Chlorine and lake water both dry hair out, and early soaking can loosen bases and create extra frizz.

My simple Passion Twists maintenance routine: sleep, scalp, and hands-off habits

A good routine doesn’t take long. It just needs to be consistent. If you’ve been searching “hair styling near me” or “hair salon near me” and you’re finally investing in protective styling, this is the part that protects your money and your time.

Sleep routine (this is non-negotiable)

  • Use a satin bonnet or sleep on a satin pillowcase. Cotton steals moisture and creates friction, which shows up as frizz.
  • Do a loose pineapple (high, soft ponytail) or wrap with a satin scarf. Keep it loose so you’re not pulling your edges.
  • If you wear braids on a ponytail during the day, don’t sleep in that same tight placement. Change it up at night.

Scalp care and itch control

If your scalp feels dry or itchy, go light. A lightweight oil (a few drops, not a pour) or an anti-itch scalp spray tends to do the job without causing buildup. Heavy butters and thick products can collect at the base and make twists look dull faster.

When you’re ready to wash (not in the first 48 hours)

When it’s time, focus on your scalp, not the full length. Use diluted shampoo or a gentle cleansing spray at the roots, rinse gently, and let them air-dry fully. Skip aggressive scrubbing. It roughs up the hair and turns “boho” into “frizzy” fast.

When to text me at Braids On Point (and when it’s totally normal)

A little scalp tenderness on day one can happen. Mild itch can happen too, especially if you’re adjusting to added hair. What I don’t want is sharp pain, bumps, or edges that feel like they’re being pulled.

  • Reach out if your hairline feels tight, sore, or looks like it’s being tugged.
  • Reach out if twists are slipping a lot early on. One or two can happen, but repeated slipping needs attention.
  • Reach out if you’re unsure what to use on your scalp. I’ll help you keep it clean without buildup.

I’m in South Dayton on the Salem Avenue corridor near the Kettering border, and I keep things practical for real schedules. If you’re in Kettering, Oakwood, West Carrollton, Riverside, Moraine, or Centerville and you need a quick refresh plan, I’ll tell you the fastest way to get your twists looking neat again without starting over. If you’re new to this style, you can also read what to expect for first-time Passion Twists.

If you want your twists to last, pair aftercare with the right plan

Passion Twists are one of my favorite protective styles because they’re lightweight and they don’t look stiff. I do them in small, medium, and large sizes, and the appointment time is about 300 minutes with pricing at $230. The best part is that “lived-in” finish tends to look better as the days go on, as long as you don’t rush the first 48 hours.

If you’re comparing styles, I laid it out here: Passion Twists vs. Marley Twists. And if you want the long-game strategy, save this for later: my Passion Twists longevity guide.

Quick reminder: If your goal is low-effort upkeep between commutes and long shifts, the routine is the win. Satin at night, light scalp care, and no early soaking.
